ABOUT

Douda Vermiculture Solutions serves as a central resource for Vermicomposting in Lebanon. We offer products and services to help our customers successfully establish vermicomposting for their homes and businesses. Douda Vermiculture Solutions began in 2017 with thriving worm farms that supply the growing demand for earthworms and vermicomposting.
Douda offers the ultimate sustainable solution for an oderless, fast and simple way to treat organic waste at the source. We strive to expand the practice of vermicomposting and promote the use of vermicompost (end product organic fertilizer) in farming to reduce the application of chemical fertilizers. We choose to work with people that will ensure a productive relationship, making growth and success possible.

FOUNDER

Nada Ghanem, MSc Environmental Specialist
Born and raised in Lebanon in the heart of the Chouf area, Nada Ghanem grew up with a passion for the environment and community development. Nada is a graduate of the Environmental Health (2010) program at the Faculty of Health Sciences, and Ecosystem Management (2015) program at the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences, American University of Beirut (AUB). During her years of study, Nada developed an interest in vermicomposting and began her research on earthworms, which culminated into DOUDA Vermiculture Solutions. Prior to founding DOUDA Vermiculture Solutions, Nada worked with different environmental organizations in Lebanon including Shouf Biosphere Reserve, United Nations Environment Programme at the Ministry of Environment, and AUB. She prepared environmental studies on air and water pollution, solid waste management, ecosystem restoration and many others. Nada also managed and coordinated several projects, such as; preparing the National Biodiversity Strategy 2016, introducing the Nubian Index to the Shouf Biosphere Reserve, assisting in old abandoned terraces restoration, tracing and monitoring the Caracal animal in Lebanon, and assisted in developing other environmental projects.
Through her different positions, Nada was exposed to a lot of environmental issues where she could identify the gaps and needs of environmental projects conducted in Lebanon. That pushed her to explore beyond the ordinary. Starting from her hometown in the Chouf area, Nada explored new methods for waste management that have not yet been implemented in the region and carried out her own project on vermicomposting with the ultimate goal of changing environmental practices and positively impacting the socioeconomic situations of communities. Thus, DOUDA came to life as a company that promotes Vermiculture practice among individuals in the Middle-East region. As she strongly believes in the power of the young generation and considers them as change makers, Nada seeks to encourage the youth to play their role in making our environments safer, cleaner and sustainable.

Vermicompost Pilot Test in Lebanon

At DOUDA we provide all the needed tools and methods that allow you to apply vermicomposting in your backyard, apartment, school and workplace enabling you to get rid of the organic waste and produce your fertilizer at home.
A pilot study was conducted to assess the viability of vermicomposting in Lebanon and to test people’s perception and attitudes toward vermicomposting and earthworms. This study took place at the household level in a rural community in the Chouf region. Thirty-six households participated to test the process. Participants were enthusiastic and were pleased with the outcomes. Many participants were interested in continuing this practice in their homes and requested for larger vermicomposting units to hold larger volumes of organic waste.
